The number one cause of the extinction of species (plants and animals) happening right now is habitat loss. Land is being converted at a vast rate to account for humanity’s intense growth and expansion. Agriculture, cattle ranching, palm oil plantations, and the mining industries are causing the deforestation of our rainforests, while our desert waters are being diverted and ultimately evaporating.

In 2021, a study published by Frontiers in Forests and Global Change found that human involvement has changed 97% of the Earth's land. Only 11% of those ecosystems are protected wildlife areas. They also found that despite 28% of those land habitats being virtually intact, a tragic 2.9% still have all the species that were there 500 years ago.
